The ‘Five-a-Day’ Consumption Exposed
We’ve learned in preschool that fruits and
vegetables should be part of everyday meals. There have been suggestions on how
much fruit and veggies we should consume in a day. Five pieces of fruits and
vegetables a day is a good goal, as suggested by a research from Sweden. The
‘five-a-day’ goal gives your body with the right amount of vitamins and
nutrients needed.
While the five-a-day goal is popularly
recommended, an analysis published in a recent article by the American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition suggests you can still reap hefty benefits even if you
consume less than five. By including any amount of green goods and produce in
your daily Paleo diet, you are still able to gain hefty health benefits.
A research in Sweden involving 71,706 men
and women between 45-83 years old was conducted to find out more about the
five-a-day consumption. Researchers gathered information from the participants
on their height, weight, eating habits, education attainment and alcohol and
tobacco use and observed them for a period of 13 years.
These are their findings:

People who consumed five
servings of fruits and vegetables daily lived an average of three years longer
than those who didn’t.
·
Those who ate at least a single
serving of fruit(s) each day lived an average of 19 months longer than those
who did not eat any fruit.
·
Those who ate three servings of
veggies each day lived an average of 32 months longer than those who did not
eat veggies.
·
The people who were eating no
fruits or veggies at the beginning of the study were 53% more likely to die in
the following 13 years than those who consumed five-a-day.
·
Eating more than five servings
of fruits and vegetables compared to the five-a-day consumption everyday did
not seem to increase lifespan.
The verdict? The five-a-day recommendation
still is a healthy goal proven to give you a lot of benefits and an increased
lifetime. We advise consuming more vegetables than fruits because the former
are packed with more vitamins and minerals, have fewer counting calories on Paleo diet, and are more
nutritionally dense than the latter.
If you find it hard to follow the
five-a-day suggestion, just take it easy as long as you are eating even a tiny
amount. As long as you are eating, it’s better than having none at all.
